5 Essential Travel Tips for Surfers Heading to Bali
Planning a surf trip to Bali soon? Good idea 😉
With warm water year-round, consistent swell rolling in every day, and countless surf spots across the island, Bali is a mecca for surfers from all corners of the globe. But if it’s your first time visiting — or you haven’t been back in a while — here are five key tips every surfer should know to make the most of their time in Bali.
1. Pack Light, Pick Up Something New While You’re Here
You don’t need a wetsuit, but reef booties might come in handy, and a surf hat can keep the sun off your beak. Bring enough clothing to get you through your first few days, but leave room in your bag to grab a few new surfwear items once you’re here. It’s hot all year round, so all you really need is a couple of pairs of boardies, a few t-shirts, some flip-flops, and a hat.
There are surf shops all over Bali, and plenty of big-brand outlet stores along Sunset Road near Kuta, selling surf gear at heavily discounted prices. You’re on a surf trip — treat yourself, live a little..
2. Don’t Rely on Board Rentals or Shop Stock
You can find surfboard rentals at most surf breaks, but the quality is hit or miss — often pretty bad. And while most of the surf shops stock boards, many of the boards have been sitting on the racks for a while — and might not be the right size or dimensions you actually want.
If you’re serious about surfing while you’re here, consider ordering a board before you arrive. We offer custom and stock boards built in Bali and designed specifically for Indo conditions. Orders take around 3 weeks to complete, and we deliver straight to your hotel or villa when you land.
3. Scooter Rentals
A scooter with a board rack is the go-to setup in Bali. They’re easy to rent and there’s probably a scooter rental shop just down the road from your accommodation. Scooters aren’t too difficult to ride, but take a couple of days to get used to. If you don’t ride one at home or aren’t confident in traffic, be honest about your ability.
Bali traffic can be pretty hectic, and riding with a board isn’t always easy. Wear a helmet, don’t ride shirtless, don’t drive like a tool — and make sure your travel insurance covers scooter use.
4. Respect the Lineups
Bali’s waves are world-class — the secret's out, everybody knows.. The lineups in Bali are getting busier every year, but with a little bit of surf etiquette, you'll be fine and score your fair share of waves. Learn and understand the surf etiquette, and be respectful to everyone in the water, especially locals.
There are waves every day, and more than enough to go around. If you’re used to being a local shredder at your home break, remember that here in Bali, you’re a visitor — be patient and wait your turn. If you’re still learning or improving, be aware of other surfers nearby to you and avoid dropping in. Keep the vibe mellow and respectful — you’ll have a way better time in the lineup, and probably get a few hoots along the way.
5. Stay in the Right Spot
There’s quality surf all across Bali — from east to west. Where you stay will shape your experience and the overall vibe of your trip.
If you’re chasing barrels and heavier, more powerful waves, base yourself on the Bukit and surf spots like Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Impossibles, and Bingin. For a mix of sandbanks and fun peaks, Canggu has you covered. Or if you want mellow waves and a slower pace of life, check out Medewi or Kedungu.
Think about your skill level and what kind of surf experience you’re really after, and choose your home base accordingly.
